Free volunteering in Nicaragua

We provide free English classes to children and adults in Diriamba, a small town in Nicaragua. Classes are given in eight public schools based on the agreement signed with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education. At APAN, our local partner, adult English classes are also offered once a week for groups of no more than 15 people.

All teachers are volunteers. There is always one long-term volunteer in Diriamba coordinating the project. Our English teaching methods are adapted to each group level and age, with an emphasis on continuous improvement and no gaps between volunteers.

As a volunteer, you will be teaching English to children and unemployed in public Schools of Diriamba, a small town south east from Managua. Classes are given four days a week during 4 to 5 hours a day. English speaking is a huge advantage in Nicaragua, where tourism is growing fastly .

There are no fees, you only pay for your accommodation and food, and this money goes entirely to your host family.

Accommodation

Volunteers stay with host families. You will get three meals per day, room and shower. Your host family will give you a warm welcome and you will have a wonderful stay during your time with them. Staying with a family allows you to get a truly local experience on the culture and traditions of the country.

The usual accommodation costs are 150 USD/month. We can arrange someone to pick you up at the airport for an additional 30 USD.

Requirements:

  • Being +18 years old
  • The ideal length of stay is between 3 to 6 months, as it provides much-needed continuity for the students. We will also consider applicants who can only stay for six weeks to 3 months; however, please note that 6 weeks is an absolute minimum, and we will give priority to volunteers who plan to stay longer.
  • Good level of English: speaking and writing
  • Basic level of Spanish (speaking) and a positive attitude to keep learning and practicing while being here
  • Some previous teaching or volunteering experience is a plus
  • Proactive, creative, flexible, and self-motivated minds
  • Passion for education, openness to new cultures, and a drive to learn new skills
  • An understanding that you will learn more than you teach during your time here
  • Full of energy and enthusiasm to make a difference
  • When choosing the period to come, please take into account that holidays in Central America go from mid-November to early February.
  • Volunteers must get their own travel insurance.
  • A Criminal Background Check Report (since you’ll be working with children)

What do we offer?

We offer recommendation letters, certificates of your volunteer stay or Linkedin recommendations for all those who work with us.
